Abstract
The theory describing chain conformation in a planar layer of grafted polyelectrolyte (polyampholyte) molecules and the conformational
transition related to the collapse of this layer caused by the decrease in solvent strenght is developed. Depending on the
values of the layer parameters (grafting and charge densities) this transition may occur as a continuous (cooperative) or
as a first order phase transition.
