Abstract
The influence of applied electric fields on the pretransitional optical activity ( $\phi$) in the chiral nematic 4-cyano-4-(2-methyl)butylphenyl (CB15) was investigated. A rotating analyzer system was used to measure the optical activity and fields up to 800 kV/m were applied. The zero-field results are consistent with theoretical predictions and contributions from the m=2 mode to $\phi$ are evident in the data. Large electric fields destroyed the contributions from the m=2 mode.
