"Pseudo-Casimir" effect in liquid crystals

Abstract
We show that the boundary conditions imposed on the director fluctuations in nematics by the presence of rigid walls give
rise to long-range forces analogous to the Casimir effect in electrodynamics. We discuss different calculational schemes for
the derivation of this results. We derive the spatial behavior of this interaction for smectics and columnar phases in different
geometries.
