Abstract
A formula for the free energy of a stack of highly charged, semiflexible membranes, previously derived by Odijk (Odijk T.
Langmuir, 1992), is shown to be the first order term in a formal expansion of the free energy in terms of powers of the electrostatic
potential. The formula describes the transition from a regime where the free energy is dominated by the electrostatic energy
to a regime where it is dominated by bending energy and entropy.
